Bugsaway.com: Flea Control

Flea Control Information.

Prevention is the key to flea control both inside and outside. On the inside it is very inexpensive and safe to use an insect growth regulator that prevents flea eggs and larvae from becoming adults. The best IGR (insect growth regulator) on the market is Flea Fix. One ounce of Flea Fix makes one gallon, is safe to spray on all carpets and furniture and lasts up to 6 months. Because it is an insect hormone, it has no effect on other animals such as mammals, reptiles or birds.

Two sprayings a year with Flea Fix will prevent a flea infestation from ever starting inside your house.

If you already have an infestation of fleas, than you must use an adulticide to kill adult fleas in the house, in the yard and on the pet. Precor 2000 is a hand held fogger that contains both an adult flea killer and an IGR. Precor 2000 is an excellent product to eliminate the fleas from a house. It is very safe and easy to use. One can will cover about 1,500 sq. ft.

If you want to use a concentrate then we recommend Suspend. This a very safe and effective synthetic pyrethroid that is labeled for complete coverage of the carpet.

Inside Flea Control

  1. A thorough cleaning of the house is your first order of business. This is a very important measure and should not be taken lightly. Start by taking all pet bedding and washing it in hot water or destroying it. Next, vacuum all carpeting and mop all wood or tile floors. It is particularly important to clean well in areas where pets sleep or rest, under furniture, in cracks and crevices and along walls. Don't forget closets too. And remember, you can't always see fleas--particularly eggs and larvae--so be thorough.
It is important to clean or vacuum furniture--expecially between and under cushions, a favorite hiding place for larvae. After vacuuming, empty contents of vacuum cleaner into an airtight plastic bag. Immediately dispose of this bag outdoors, or burn. All floors--including closet floors, should be cleared of boxes and other items.
  2. All pets should be removed from the house and defleaed with one of our products or by your veterinarian. Fish tanks should be unplugged and covered with a wet towel.
  3. Treat all infested areas using a good adulticide. Turn off the air conditioning and do not return for four hours. Any adulticide should kill the adult fleas for about 7 days. Retreatments will probably be needed to kill the adults as they emerge from the cocoon. To prevent future infestations apply Flea Fix inside twice a year, outside 3 times a year.

Fleas - The Hard Facts

After a flea treatment, expect the following...

  1. Most adult fleas will die from the first treatment, but the problem is far from being over.
  2. Within a few days, new fleas will appear. This is due to hatching pupae. Since NO spray can kill pupae, you must wait until all the pupae hatch out. Expect to see fleas between 2 & 4 weeks after the initial treatment. This is normal and depends strictly on how many pupae you have in your home.

What can you do to speed up the process?

  1. Vacuum daily. This causes the pupae to hatch out faster.
  2. Understand. If you remove your pet from inside the home, the fleas will have no choice but to focus on YOU! It may sound cruel to keep your pet inside where you know it is getting fleas, but it's either your or the pet and he is a lot easier to dip.
  3. Do not intentionally leave rooms vacant or undisturbed for any unusual length of time. Flea pupae will hatch ONLY when there is a warm blooded animal around. They can stay in the pupal stage for up to 1 full year.
  4. Follow up treatment. A follow up treatment with an adulticide such as Precor 2000 is recommended 1 to 2 weeks after the initial treatment.
  5. Purchase our Flea Trap. As the pupae hatch they will go towards the heat of the trap and get caught inside the sticky board.
  6. Be patient. Most flea infestations take only 1 or 2 treatments over 2 weeks.
  7. Learn!! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Apply Flea Fix 2 times a year and 3 times a year in the yard and NEVER have fleas again.
