What the heck is this thing?

I periodically find these insects in/around my home. They are about an inch long and look like a cross b/t a large ant (head) and a bee (body). They do not have wings, but do have claw-like legs that make a scraping sound on the floor as they scurry. They really look alien. Anyone know what I'm dealing with here? Can mature termites be this large?
