Leaf footed Bug

Aha! After weekly to daily encounters with this bug, I have finally figured out what it is from pictures on this website! My question is that I have lived in my house for 11 years (Seattle area) and have never seen one of these bugs. In September we re-roofed and painted and all of a sudden they were every where. Today I was visiting a friend who recently did some remodeling, including a new roof, and saw one of the bugs. They have been having the same problem. What is the link between construction/roofing?
