Fruit flies will be attracted to...fruit! I don't think they like people very much. Does you mom have any plants in the area? If the soil is too moist little flyers can breed there. Treat the soil or remove the plants. Also check outside around the house for the same critters.
If they're outside, they'll clear up once it gets cold.
