Wallace, you be good!!! That is a rove beetle, which is EXACTLY what I think the bug is... Some rove beetles are skinnier than others. Some have the forked rear, others do not. Some are very shiny, others less so. Rove beetles are harmless, and often hunt for other bugs. Some eat carrion. They are wanderers (hence the name?) and seem to be coming indoors right now, as the nights get cooler (who can blame them?) Rove beetles have very short wing covers, and a long narrow abdomen. They can curl the abdomen up over the body, in some cases. Sophie, could this be your bug?
