:I was thumbing through an insect book and have finally identified this insect. It is called a "cow killer ant", although is actually a wasp. The females are wingless and are capable of delivering a very powerful sting--hence the name. For a picture and more information, just type in cow killer ant in your engine search and you will get several good links.
