: Recently my son brought this bug home in a bag so we could look it up, we have never seen these before. He found it near a new development of townhouses. It is close to an inch long, looks like a ant, it is black and has a red strip on the back of it. We looked it up but all we see is the velvet ant, sometime called the cow killer ant, but the colors are switched. It does seem to have tiny hairs on it. If anyone could help me to see if this is a dangerous bug let me know. there are alot of kids in that neighborhood. I have lived in this town for more then ten years and never seen a bug like this before. thanks to anyone who can help If it is a velvet ant, that is a solitary wasp. They have a nasty sting. They live in the ground if you can find the nest you can soak it down with Viper. To order click on www.e-bug.net or call 1-800-887-2847. Sincerely, Phyllis Teel
