Hooded Tick Spider

Found a spider last evening that after hours of reseach found to be a Hooded Tick Spider. I live in Las Vegas, in a new development literally in the middle of the desert. Neddles to say, this spider scared the hell out of us. It was huge and defensive. While I found 1 drawing on the internet, it didn't do justice to my dinner guest. It also gave no usable information on this spider. Can you please research and tell me about it, possibly why it got into my home and what will kill it. Also I would like to know if it will make us sick if we are bitten.
