Mortar Bees

My friend has just bought a thatched cottage at the back of the house in the masonary many bees are flying out of what looks like bored holes in the stone work.

A chap said that they wer 'Mortar Bees and she should get rid of them pronto.

What are they ?? How are they best dealt with ?

Your help and advice would be most appreciated.
