Squirels in my attic

How does one go about getting squirels out of the attic. I have found where they ate through the house to get in the attic, but would like to know how to get them out before closing the hole up. Is there some kind of spray or sonic device that will drive them out and not hurt the family pets ? (dog, hamsters)
