Black grainy stuff coming from comforter

During my vacation I bought a lovely comforter. It was packaged in this zipped up plastic bag. I took it home and did not open the bag for a few years. When I eventually decided on using the comforter I opened the bag and spread out the comforter on the bed to see the effect. I left it on for the day and in the evening there were small grainy gritty stuff on the outside of the comforter that I had never seen before. The grains feel and have the size of gritty cornmeal except that they are a mix of black and brown. I cleaned the comforter by shaking out the stuff into our bath and hosing it down the drain. I put aside the comforter and went to bed. Next day I examined the comforter more closely and there was more of this grainy stuff but I could see no bugs. No where else in my home has this grainy gritty stuff. None on my bed since the comforter is now in a garbage bag ready to throw out. None in my ceiling, I tested that to make sure. My home incidentally has just been fully renovated. All wood products are brand new. Only the walls were kept and repainted. Could someone shed some light on this? Could this mean that I imported the comforter with something inside of it creating this stuff which laid dormant all this time. Should I now have to throw my comforter out?
