Bed bugs and mites are very different. Bed bugs are blood feeders that will occupy the cracks, crevices, and m,ateress folds during the daylight and come out at night for a blood meal. The first sign of bed bugs are blood spots on the sheets, and fecal spots near their resting places. They are very visible, from 1/8 to 1/4 inch in size flattened and oval in shape. Mites on the other hand are not usually visible with the naked eye, most feed on organic matter such as dead skin. Most mites do not bite humans, however many people are sensitive to their detritis, dead mites, fecal matter, and body parts. Large mites such as the chigger will burrow under the skin to feed, however chiggers are not found indoors and are very restrictive in the areas they will populate (midwestern U.S.). Replace your sheets, wash all bedding in the hottest setting (at least 140F), you should use a crack and crevice tool on your vacuum in all areas of the room, and mattress. A professional steam cleaning will remove any mites and allergens.
