Strange wood eating bug???

: I just discovered that we have an infestation of an insect that is eating one of our trees and has started on the telephone pole too. I have never see a bug like this before so I am hoping you all can help. : Description: : The but itself is in a shell of wood. It camouflages itself on the tree because the shell of it looks like wood. However, the bug itself looks like a little black centipede. It can go in and out of it's shell like a turtle head would. If you look at it while it's head is in it's shell, it would look just like a piece of wood. Very strange..... These bugs have eaten a 8 foot tall bush within a week....today we just realized that the bugs were there because they are camouflaged.
