Waterbug Infestation

: I live on Staten Island, NY and we are infamous for these huge disgusting roaches roaming our sidewalks and backyards. However, they have made their way inside and with a vengeance b/c where we used to just see one or two in the basement after 11pm, now they are parading the kitchen and bathroom in the middle of the day. We have had an incredible rainy June but come ON, they are all over the place and are terrifying my child who won't dare go into the bathroom w/o a chaperone. I would have had my house exterminated already but because of my child's past w/asthma, not to mention I have a cat--I'm concerned about the potential health hazard. Anybody have any suggestions for a "safe for animals and children" yet kills these indestructible invaders solution? I've been using glue traps here and there but I swear it's like they're helping them multiply instead of die out. : Thanks everyone.
