Rats vs. mice

: I live in the upper state SC. We live outside of town and our house is surrounded by woods. My roommates are complaining of a mouse problem. The one they showed me looked to be a very small field mouse. Now i have never seen one anywhere in the house and especially not in my room. I also have two pet rats though I was figured that the smell was scaring away the mice. Could I move the rats to a central place in the house and possibly keep the mice away without any chemicals or traps?
