Hi--I just bumped into your excellent listserv. I'm not a member but hope you'll help me anyway.

I have the following problem : since last spring I have witnessed on 3 or 4 occasions something growing in our basement. Its a brown line (about 6 inches long) that forms in a straight vertical line, on a basement wall near a pipe. It forms always in the same place. When I scrap it, I see white larvae crawling away. It seems the brown "stuff" is used to cover the larvae as they're forming.

Could something be going on inside the wall or outside in the ground? Its an unfinished cement wall with a coat of plaster.

We do have our share of centipedes, beetles and spiders in the basement, the usual for an old house.
I'm not sure what insects I'm dealing with, and would like to know.

Thanks for your advice,

Alexandra
