Shrub eating insect

I found a shrub being eaten and used as a sort of tunnel for an insect I did not recognize. It was black, about the length of a penny and had pinchers on either end of it's body...the ones on it ass end being larger than it front. We live in Virginia and are afraid of them moving into the house . How can we get rid of them and what are they
