Sounds like could be carpet beetles. The larvae are like small hairy maggots, and the beetles are like small dark dark grey ladybirds with mottled markings - you may have seen them on windowsills/light surfaces. It is only the larvae (known as wolly bears) that eat clothing, carpet fibres etc. We had a few in our house but I rarely found the larvae, just saw the beetles cos they like to try to get outside to feed on pollen. Best way to get rid of them is to make sure all carpet/floor edges are hoovered regularly, wash all clothing (or freeze/dry clean woolens) to get rid of eggs/larvae. Make sure there are no corners which can harbour build ups of fluff etc.
