Bed bugs are a pain in the arse. Whether or not they were just in your bed, I don't know. A qualified exterminator should come by and do an inspection. But they can definately hide anywhere there is a crack or fold in a chair or something. We found some in the moldings of the doorways. Usually if you have them the standard procedure is to have all of your clothes, linens, bedding, washed and dried on HOT, or drycleaned. Then bagged in plastic until they are gone. You should make sure you have an exterminator who knows how to deal with them. They usually haveto come and treat your apartment somewhere between 3 and 4 times. There is a bunch more information on these boards and elsewhere on the web. Search and learn the most you can. A lot of times you need to be the one educating your landlord on what they need to do. We had to with our problem. Also, you can call the health department and ask them for help to see what you can do. They can't do much though unless the landlord blantanly does not deal with the problem. You aren't seeing red flags about bed bugs from health officials either because so far they have been unable to prove that bed bugs carry any disease. So while they bite and completely SUCK to have, you won't be contractnig any nasty diseases because of it. Educate yourself, get a good exterminator, and you should be fine. : About 6 weeks ago my left arm started to itch, i thought it was a mosquito bite. After that both arms started itching day after day. I went to the emergency room, the doctor examine and told me i have hives. She set up an appointment for me to see the dermatologist. When i went home i was still getting itchy red welts on my upper body. I finally went to see the dermatologist, she told me maybe its bugs in the home and she's going to do a skin biopsy on 10/19. : To cut a long story short: I was making up my bed ad i saw a little bug on my ikea cushion, i crushed it in a napkin and there was blood. Right there was the answer to the MYSTERIOUS ITCHY RED WELTS AND SCARS. I took everything off my bed and leaned up the mattress ans box spring. I found couple of baby ones. I called my building manager right away... She sent an exterminator the following day. All he did was spray my matrtess and box spring and said "he will be back tofollow up." I slept in my living room ever since. NOT ONE VAMPIRE BITE ME SINCE I LEFT MY BED ROOM. I'm just going to throw out my mattress and box spring and buy from a reputable company. I bought my mattress from feb 04. Do you guys think it was there in the mattress before or is it in my bedroom? I really don't know why dept of health is not addressing this problem.
