When is a June Bug NOT a June Bug?

My girlfriend and I have been arguing over what a June Bug is. She says that they are little, round, BROWN, flying critters that will occasionally bite if bothered enough.

I've thought my whole life that they are: about the size of my thumb, dark greenish or black, flying critters, that never bite people.

Please help me settle this one way or the other, with as detailed a description as possible.
