These huge wasps are pretty common down here in Texas. Locally they're called cicada killers (cicadas are those unbelievably ugly fly-looking locusts). These wasps will hunt down these cicadas and fly them back to their nest...it's actually quite a sight. If you're patient ,usually in the early evenings, you can observe one in action. They generally are unaggresive unless provoked. Only the females can sting.Killed one here last year that measured at least 3 inches.
