There are many different species of bees that nest in the ground. Usually this digging is the
female bee getting a nest chamber ready for her young or to live in the winter. These bees tend to not be very aggressive - you leave them alone and they leave you alone.
They also tend to be beneficial in gardens - collecting nectar and pollen
which pollinates your fruit and flowers. Many of them lay their eggs on a
ball of pollen in the underground chamber. Be sure this is a bee, as
there are some wasps that also nest in the ground and some of them also come
in the black and yellow coloring.

: I have recently noticed these holes in my lawn with a mound of dirt around it. I have been trying to figure out what was the cause of these holes until the other eveing I noticed this huge bee hovering around the grass, near a hole. The bee was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, the bottom half of the insect was black with yellow rings around it. This is the largest bee I have ever seen. I left it alone and sure enough the next moring there was a hole where I last seen the bee. What is digging up my lawn? Any idea what these "bees" are?
