Holes all over lawn

I have recently noticed these holes in my lawn with a mound of dirt around it. I have been trying to figure out what was the cause of these holes until the other eveing I noticed this huge bee hovering around the grass, near a hole. The bee was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, the bottom half of the insect was black with yellow rings around it. This is the largest bee I have ever seen. I left it alone and sure enough the next moring there was a hole where I last seen the bee. What is digging up my lawn? Any idea what these "bees" are?
