The male is aggressive and buzzes around a lot, but has no stinger. They only live for ~75 days. Yes, they live in tunnels (where they lay their eggs for next year).

OH MY GOSH! We have the same giant bee in our yard. We live in Connecticut. It dug a hole in our yard and left a mound of dirt on top. We are all afraid of it and were woundering if it could hurt us. None of us have ever seen anything like this before in our lives. I have four young children living in our house and am worried about this thing stinging the kids.
