Perhaps they are chiggers? We also call them red bugs down here in Texas. But I've gotten them as far north as nebraska and southern iowa. Since they live in the grass, not st. augestine, they seem to prefer fine grasses like bermuda grass.. I always get them on my feet and ankles when I walk in an infected area. They make red intensly itchy spots. I think they actually burrow into the skin and live for a while... my mother always dabbed clear nail polish on them to 'smother' them and it seems to help... I think it's probably actually just the alcohol or something else in the nail polish that is working... but you might find out if there are chiggers where you live or where you've been visiting... it could explain it. Not everyone's yard will have chiggers dependingon the type of grass they have and if they put down other pestitcides or sulfer as lawn treatments... it's one idea anyway...
