During those ten days I washed sheets, pillows, duvets, etc. EVERY DAY. I washed every single item we had taken on vacation with us – and that’s a lot of stuff when you have a baby with you. I washed every towel, robe, and article of clothing after we used it, every day. I stripped my daughter’s room of her curtains, bumper set, crib skirt, etc. I even microwaved my pillows one day, and tried putting my daughter’s bumper set in the freezer. Both appliances suffered some problems due to this usage, which I won’t go into here. But I fear I almost burned the house down! I vacuumed the whole house, repeatedly. Ultimately, I threw away my pillows and spent about $200 on new ones and vinyl pillow and mattress covers. I was showering twice a day and shampooing and washing my body with cat shampoo. I even wiped my body down with Clorox bleach wipes. I considered shaving my entire body. I was truly desperate. I was especially freaked out because I have a one year old. How was I going to protect her from this invisible infestation? Can’t spray a one year old with insecticide!

Now I have seen a family doctor, the Terminex guy (who inspected my home), and a dermatologist. I also contacted the real estate agent who rented the home to us. I have received conflicting information from each party. The primary doctor was an idiot. Final consensus: It is possible, and maybe even likely, that we were originally attacked by mites, probably bird mites. It is possible that some may have initially come home with me. But they don’t live for long off of a host or away from a bird host. Now, ten days later, my symptoms have slowed and almost stopped. Either I stopped reacting to the bites originally received on vacation, the mites have died, or my psychosis is abating.
