A bloomin moron...uh, morOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! <<If you are going to be outdoors the best way to avoid chiggers is the use of a good bug repellant like Deep Woods Off. If you suspect you have picked up the little pests once you have been out wash with lye soap as soon as you come back in from where you were.

Then paint the bites with either Chigger Rid that you can buy at the pharmacy or paint them with fingernail polish. This suffocates them. After a couple days all you can do is treat the bites for the intense itching until they heal. To get them out of your house use a good brand name bug bomb following it's directions implicitly. I try to find the one that is called Flea Stop as it gets EVERYTHING in addition to fleas, too. Flea Stop is hard to find though.
