Brownish-black bug (beetle?) with thick tan stripe

Hoping someone can help. I have noticed on my bedroom floor and tonight under the kitchen sink some sort of brownish black bug (beetle?) with a thick tan stripe across its back. I hate bugs and am thoroughly grossed out by them. Anyone have any idea what they could be and how to get rid of them?
