Huge black flying beetle or a small plane!!

This monster flew in to my bedroom through the patio door yesterday, scaring both me and the cat! I swear it was golf ball size, but realistically was only a little bit smaller... very black and very round. It had a loud, deep sounding buzz, very menacing and I remain to be convinced that it was harmelss. It came back today (for another look?!) and buzzed around in my skylight before leaving. At least I hope it left, I can't hear it but am going to make my husband turn the room upside before I can rest in peace.

If anyone can help me name it, then I can do a bit of research and at least convince myself that it won't kill me (or my cat!)
